“Okie from Muskogee” is a song that was recorded by country music artist Merle
Haggard. That song went on to be one of the most famous songs of Haggard’s
career. I was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1972, just a few years after that song
was released. I was a gift, blessing, miracle, surprise, bombshell, and shock, all
rolled in to one for my very young parents. I guess you could say that I was born an
Okie from Muskogee, yet I have never referred to myself as one to this day. I do
however find harmony in some of the songs lyrics and like living right and being
free.
